Whether you’re planning an engagement shoot, a wedding, or a personal project, these qualities indicate a photographer who will deliver exceptional results and a stress-free experience.
1. Transparency: Example Galleries and Upfront Pricing
When my fiancé and I were searching for wedding photographers, I was surprised by how difficult it was to find full galleries of their work. Many photographers only showcase a few curated images, making it hard to gauge their overall style. The photographer we ultimately chose stood out because they provided a full example gallery from a previous wedding.
It can be intimidating for photographers to share an entire gallery, as not every photo will be portfolio-worthy. However, this transparency is crucial for clients to truly understand a photographer’s style and consistency. Make sure the photographer you choose isn’t afraid to showcase their complete work and provides clear, upfront pricing to avoid surprises.
Unfortunately, many photographers alter their pricing based on the event—charging two or three times as much for an engagement session compared to a couples session for the same experience. I strongly disagree with such price gouging. A one-hour engagement session should hold the same value as a one-hour couples session. Look for a photographer who values fairness and delivers consistent quality regardless of the session type.

A strong portfolio should reflect sharp, well-lit images with a consistent style. Consider whether the photos are in focus, whether the mood of the images aligns with your preferences, and whether you prefer natural lighting or studio/artificial lighting.
Does the photographer’s portfolio tell a cohesive story? Do the tones, compositions, and overall vibe match what you’re looking for? All of these factors are critical when selecting a photographer whose work resonates with you.

Client testimonials and word-of-mouth recommendations are powerful indicators of a photographer’s reliability. Look for consistent praise about their communication, professionalism, and ability to deliver high-quality results. Photographers with glowing reviews are more likely to create a positive experience for you.
4. Quick and Clear Communication
Timely and transparent communication is key. Photographers who respond quickly, answer questions clearly, and proactively update you throughout the process signal they are willing to go above and beyond for their clients.
Rushed communication can lead to misunderstandings, but even worse is the potential for a photographer to rush you through the process during your shoot or take an excessively long time to deliver your photos. How much of a priority are you if the photographer cannot edit and deliver your photos in a timely manner? Prioritize those who make you feel valued from the initial inquiry to the final delivery.
5. Versatility Across Photography Styles
A photographer with experience in various genres—like real estate, events, and portraits—brings a unique edge to their work. Versatility allows them to adapt to different settings and challenges. For example, the intricate editing techniques used in real estate photography can enhance detail shots and portraits.
You may think you want a specialist photographer, someone who focuses exclusively on the type of shoot you need. However, specialists may lack flexibility in certain situations.
For instance, portrait photographers are often excellent at leading poses and giving verbal cues but may struggle to step back and let children play naturally to capture candid moments. On the other hand, a sports photographer might excel at mastering their camera settings for fast-paced action but lack the assertiveness to energize and organize a large group for a photo.
Versatility creates well-rounded photographers who can adapt to the moment and handle a variety of scenarios with ease, ensuring that every detail of your session is captured beautifully.
